This term in Library we got the chance to judge the CBCA shortlist information books. Now I am about to state the Good Layout criteria:
- The Layout MUST be clear. (More reasons underneath)
- The font needs to be easy to read (style & size) or the reader would drop it and nobody would understand
- Shouldn’t have too much written on the page. Or your reader will drop the book. Out of no interest
- You need to make sure that the blurb matches the content. So their expectations are as good as the reality.
That is only the Layout and the is still more criteria to that.
Now here comes the visuals this is extremely important because this is what attracts readers. VISUALS:
- It should include lots of pictures if you are posing this to children under 7 they probably won’t find it attractive.
- The visuals MUST match the text or else the reader will get quite confused.
- You need colour somewhere to make your book visually appealing.
- Don’t put to much detail it is going to distract the reader. Visuals should be simple not complicated.
That’s all for visuals since information is so important I am only going to list a few. Here it comes. Info:
- Detailed or the reader won’t completely understand
- Accurate
- Up to date
- Gets to the point.
My winner in the CBCA shortlist drumroll please (drumroll in the background)
Make believe!!! This book is my winner because it teaches you how to do mind tricks. My second reason is it also gives your mind a bit of a kick. 3rd is would you rather spend your time learning and drawing or read really small words in a book that has nearly 1 million of words it’s obvious what you would choose.
Are you learning or killing your brain trying to read tiny words.
